PFAS - uncontrollable danger?

Extrusion blow molding | 08. September 2023

Lately, we have been hearing and reading more and more about "PFAS". But what means “PFAS” at all? PFAS stands for "Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances “According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection in Germany, this group of substances can be found in more than 10,000 different substances and materials.

They are not natural substances or material and they are produced since the late 1940s.

They are are a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water. Fluoropolymer coatings can be in a variety of products.

PFAS are also used to treat surfaces and are a component of pesticides and fire extinguishing agents.

They are extremely durable and spread rapidly over the water. They also accumulate in human and animal organisms. . Various effects on health have been demonstrated, although there is still no exact statement on what the effects are.

Fact is, however, that we ingest them in large quantities through drinking water, food (especially animal food) and packaging.

Animal food in particular is a PFAS carrier because animals also ingest  these substances. They enter other food through the water it contains and the packaging it comes in.

But what is being done about it now?

Since 2023, there are maximum levels of PFAS for fish, meat, eggs and drinking water.

The right packaging can also help to prevent the substances from getting into our food chain.

Many coatings for hollow plastic bodies on the market contain fluorine and with this the risk that PFAS will araise and transmitted into the food product.

The so-called CoEx4 barrier technology enables us to use extrusion blow molding for the production of packaging with a barrier layer, using EVOH or PA. Using these barrier materials This eliminates the risk of PFAS entering the food chain. CoEx4 technology is a long-time existing and proven technology , developed by  W. MÜLLER EBM Technology which can be perfectly integrated into your existing mono or ReCo blow molding machinery with an upgraded extrusion head, extruders and easy to handle control system.

#storage heads - We have delivered another major project. A storage head with a storage volume of 60 litres has reached our customer. Although a large project with a height of around 4 metres, it is by no means the first order of this size to leave our production halls. Although we are known for our head technology for the consumer goods industry, we have also been building large heads and storage heads for industrial packaging and large technical parts for over 30 years. And we can also do this in multiple layers!

Plantech

PLANTECH CST

Plantech-CST has won another challenge: tanks with granules totally free of contamination.

MKP, the Spanish agent of Syncro Group, wanted to highlight the efficiency of Plantech-CST team with these words: “I want to thank you for your commitment and timely intervention at one of our most important customers, a leader in PET recycling. The successfully tested system works perfectly and the product arrives at the silos free of contamination such as angel hair and dust. The end customer signed the protocol of the system installation after carrying out several tests and seeing first-hand that the granule met all the high standards required, so much so that they will immediately start loading tanks of final product to be shipped to customers directly from the silos”.

The ever-increasing need is to remove angel hair and/or dust from the granule in order to have a raw material stored in the silos perfectly clean and ready to be delivered to the end customer, ensuring the input of a high quality raw material into the process, thus minimizing waste and production waste.

In this specific case, the supply consists of three separating hoppers installed on existing silos and combined with a centralized suction filter to separate the granules from dust and angel hair.

The separating hoppers are connected to the individual loading pipes of the silos where a special internal design of the hoppers forces the granules to fan out, allowing the countercurrent suction airflow to convey the dust and angel hair to the dust collector filter.

This Plantech-CST system is highly efficient and guarantees an unrivalled degree of granule cleanliness, ensuring high production standards.

The system reaches its maximum level of efficiency when combined with dense phase pneumatic conveying, which substantially reduces angel hair formation during raw material transport.

The possible applications are countless; from the loading of silos from tanks to the pneumatic transport of raw materials for plastic extrusion processes like blown film, cast, sheet, injection, pipes, cables, recycling and many more.

This conveying system can be implemented without any special modification to existing plants, making them more efficient and performing.

Minimizing the consumption of energy and raw materials are two key points that drive Syncro Group’s R&D division, which is increasingly committed to achieving the “Zero Waste Myssion”.

All the companies belonging to Syncro Group work together through a unique synergy with the aim of closing the circle of the Circular Economy.

Syncro Group is a leading supplier of automation for extrusion, quality control systems, material handling and storage, defect measurement, recycling lines, laboratory and pilot lines through the expertise of the companies SYNCROPLASMACPLANTECH-CSTACELABSEUR.EX.MA. and SBDRY.
